  • #1 gets clicked roughly 40% of the time
  • #2 gets 12%
  • #3 - 8%, #4 - 6% ...
  • Lower third get roughly 2-3% of clicks
  • Page 2 and beyond (where you may well be) gets just 10% to fight over!

If your website is not found on page 1, and at a stretch page 2, you simply will not be getting enough traffic from search engines to make the effort you put into your site worthwhile. 1. Keyword & Competitive Research

An extremely important step, the most appropriate keywords are identified to focus on. The keywords should preferably meet the following criteria:

  • Relevant - keywords must be relevant to your company, your services and products.
  • Popular - no matter the niche, there is no point in targeting a keyword that is searched for once or less per month (unless it is a very highly specialized/niche product or service). There should be sufficient to give a return on investment.
  • Commercial Intent - with the exception of non-profits organizations and other non-commercial ventures (which we also help), businesses should hopefully be interested in capturing the attention of qualified prospects. Those that are ready to open their wallets and purses for what you offer!
  • Lower Competition - So you sell computers? No, targeting 'computers' is not an effective strategy! Due to the massive competition for keywords that are very general and short, it makes far better sense to find more specific keywords that are relevant to your business.

Competition is also assessed at this stage, in order to analyze your competitors and determine the best ways to outrank them in the long term.

2. Site Structure

Although site structure is crucial for larger websites, it is important for smaller sites as well. Ideally, since positions #1 and #2 result in over 50% of clicks on average, it would be great to have 2 or more pages appearing in the search engine results. This IS achievable for small businesses! The largest aspect to site structure is getting the site indexed, and indexed well. There are many sites that are poorly structured that have fewer than 50% pages indexed (that means they will never be found in the search engines because they are simply not there).

There are many factors that are used by search engines to decide which results to display, and many are influenced on each website page. There are both visible and hidden factors, such as the actual HTML code and the text on the page that need optimization.

4. Link Building

Finally, but often most importantly, pages need links to establish trust within the search engines. Not all links are created equal, however, so it's important to focus on links that will infer both trust and relevance, and there are specific strategies and techniques to do just that.
